While biking up challenging slopes and undulating hills can be fun on a standard cycle, it’s certainly smooth sailing on an e-bike. If you’re planning a tour through the captivating ruggedness of Tuscany’s diverse landscapes for example, then an e-bike can help you reach those astounding, sun-soaked views with ease. Here we share why we love Tuscany and our favourite Italy e-bike tours including the beautiful Chianti region.
E-Bike Benefits
An e-bike is almost identical to a normal bike in every respect, except for the fact it has an electric motor fitted to help with riding. That doesn’t mean the bike does all the work for you of course – it simply makes pedalling much easier thanks to the motor’s assistance.
There are actually a number of advantages to this, with perhaps the least obvious one being fitness. While it might seem counterintuitive, riding an e-bike can actually mean you do more exercise than on a traditional bike. This is because you’ll cycle faster and for longer thanks to the assisted pedalling, which translates into more exercise overall. The lower-impact nature of the exercise is also easier on your joints and muscles.
Last but not least, there’s the fact that you’ll have a much easier time getting up hills or through energy-draining headwinds – ideal for a few of our Tuscany cycling tours, as you’ll see.
Why we Love E-Biking in Italy…
Movie-worthy scenery – Some days it will feel as though every turn reveals a new film set – from the old country roads of Gladiator to the villas of Much Ado About Nothing, you’ll want to keep your camera firmly in hand. The vistas from atop the Chianti electric bike tour hills have to be seen to be believed. Luckily, your e-bike will mean you’ll still have plenty of energy to take photos when you reach the top.
Traditional cuisine – One of the best things about Tuscany is indulging in the local cuisine. We recommend a stop off in the charming village of Asciano for an authentic wood-fired pizza. As you enjoy the Chianti electric bike tour, famous around the world for its fine wines, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to sample some in the sunshine.
Medieval villages – We love Cortona, a hillside town with views of Montepulciano, Lake Trasimeno and the Tuscan hills. Other village highlights on our tours in Tuscany include Radda and Greve in Chianti, Montalcino and Asciano.
Our Favourite Italian E-Bike Tours…
The Grand Tour of Tuscany
Celebrated films like Tea with Mussolini, Hannibal, and Quantum of Solace have been filmed against the vivid Tuscan countryside, which is something of a favourite when it comes to movie locations. This tour takes you past the Monastery of Sant’Anna (used in The English Patient), too.
E-biking through Val d’Orcia is a real highlight of this trip, and you’ll really be able to take in the lush shades of green and gold that blanket this rural paradise. While you’ll certainly be conserving energy as you glide up the curves of the quintessentially Tuscan hills, don’t miss a chance to pick up some locally-made pecorino – a hard, salty cheese similar to parmesan. This tour also includes the Chianti electric bike tour, famous for its fine wine. The town of Pienza, with its neat piazzas and towering palazzos is another highlight of the valley.
Take in the stunning countryside of Tuscany on this tailor-made e-bike tour through spectacular Tuscan valleys.
The Grand Tour of Umbria
The wonderful Umbrian countryside surrounds the quiet side roads on our Grand Tour of Umbria. On an e-bike, you will breeze through the side roads, tracks, and the ancient ‘via Flaminia’ highway of the Roman empire. There are plenty of historical sites and amazing vineyards to see along your way too.
Whether you are enjoying the sites of the traditional Tuscan castles or marvelling at the second largest theatre of the Roman Empire, this area is steeped in thousands of years of history. There is so much art and culture in each village you will be entertained throughout your trip. On top of that, you will enjoy the best local cuisine and wine.
Cycling Umbria offers gourmet Italian cuisine, fine wines and stunning Italian countryside. Cruise through the Umbrian hills by e-bike on our cycling holiday.
