We love seaside cycling for its simplicity and calming atmosphere where the air feels fresher, and spirits become lighter. It’s even been said that the ions in sea air boost serotonin levels, relieve stress and help with deep sleep. So, what could be a more perfect getaway than a leisurely cycling holiday to the seaside?

Sussex – The Seven Sisters

Heading to Britain’s south coast in search of relaxation and rejuvenation is nothing new. The great summer holiday was invented by the Victorians who, with newly built railway networks to the seaside, revelled in a trip to England’s seaside towns with promises of fun, sea and clean air. The things that continue to lure people today! Even Queen Victoria herself would travel to Sunny Sussex for a yearly staycation, the city of Brighton being her choice of residence.

Much like back then, the wonders of the Sussex coastline continue to astonish people today. One notable sight to the east of Brighton is the striking chalk cliffs that bellow above the rocky shore. The Seven Sisters stand as a universal symbol of the British seaside and are one of the most beautiful natural erosion spectacles to behold. Their blinding white hue contrasts with the turquoise sea below and the blanket of greenery that covers them from above. As you pedal along this coastal shelf, make sure to stop and take a photo.

Amalfi Coast – Ravello

Steeped in thousands of years of history, the charming town of Ravello sits on a mountaintop 1,200 feet above the Mediterranean Sea. Known famously as “The Balcony of the Amalfi Coast”, its awe-inspiring views, which look onto the sapphire sea, are framed with vibrant pink flower blooms and glowing white statues. Seduced by its quiet nature, medieval streets and garden villas, artists, composers and authors have come here seeking inspiration and refuge. Over the last two centuries, artist JMW Turner, composer Richard Wagner and writer Virginia Woolf have admired the sweeping vistas of Ravello.

Amalfi Coast – Atrani

If you’re looking for views on the shore, head further down the coast to find the secret fishing village of Atrani. In the day, its sandy coves are lined with electric blue parasols which contrast against the pastel pink and orange buildings in the backdrop. As the cyan blue waters turn dark at dusk, watch as tiny fishing boats carry lamps out to sea in the hope of attracting schools of fish. The countless lights floating in the evening waves are just as amazing as seeing thousands of stars in the midnight sky.

Bordeaux – Dune du Pilat

Europe’s tallest sand dune resides in France’s southwestern region of Bordeaux. Renowned for its gigantic size, this mass of golden sand covers 2.7 kilometres with a volume of 60 million metres cubed. Its majestic form looks like something plucked straight out of a film, providing visitors with an otherworldly experience.

Its size doesn’t overshadow its beauty, however. As the sun beats down on its surface, waves of sand cast snaking shadows across its slopes. At sunset, the dune glows pink mirroring the pastel colours in the sky. However, the views from the summit are even more magnificent. From the pinnacle ridge of the dune, experience an astonishing 360° view. Wonder at the panoramic sight of grandiose forest, sand dunes and perpetual ocean. When cycling around Bordeaux’s Arcachon Bay, be sure to visit this unique natural wonder.

Catalonia – Calella de Palafrugell

Spain is well-known for its 8,000 kilometres of coastline which attracts visitors every year to its warm coastas. However, the Costa Brava shouldn’t be compared to the tourist-crowded coastlines. This stretch of shoreline is sprinkled with “secret seasides”, one being Calella de Palafrugell. With a peaceful atmosphere and calm beaches, the seaside town of Calella de Palafrugell is the perfect place to slow down and take in the vibrant coastline. Whilst riding along the seafront you’ll spot dazzling coves chipped out of the hillside. Here, stark white buildings with terracotta roofs shine against the deep sapphire sea and delicate fisherman boats are left perched on the sand awaiting their next adventure on the water.

Catalonia – Cap Roig Botanical Garden

Cap Roig Botanical Garden provides one of the most charming viewpoints in Spain. Amidst blooming swathes of plants and the sweet smell of flowers, catch sight of the Mediterranean Sea and Catalonia’s shining coastline. Hugging the upper cliff shelf, this floral masterpiece lights up every morning. Watch as the sun paints the garden as thousands of flowers shine bright against the ocean backdrop. Pedal through this botanical haven and enjoy this picture-perfect seascape.
