Our Tour Gradings

On each of our holidays, you’ll notice they’re tagged with an ease of tour. We have put these tour gradings together to help you gauge just how active the cycling on the trip is. Of course, these gradings are subjective, and what might be moderately challenging for one person may well be leisurely for another, so we also like to offer information on route length, terrain, and elevation gain during the trip.

Each of our holidays has a more detailed breakdown on its grading and this is the best place to find information on the specific trip you are enquiring about, but below is a handy overview of how we grade our tours to help you find your level.

Further advice on these gradings can also be sought by getting in touch with our cycle experts today.

Easy

As the tag suggests, these tours are our easiest. Generally, they feature routes ranging between 15 and 50km long, and whilst there may be one or two climbs during the day, these tend to be relatively short stretches of uphill. Depending on the location, often much of the riding on these itineraries will be on designated cycle paths or lanes. An easy tour is the perfect holiday for a first-time Softie, anyone who hasn’t ridden a bike for years, or if you are just looking for a relaxed trip with an easier level of pedalling.

Leisurely

These tours are wonderful for those who are perhaps slightly more frequent cyclists, have maybe ridden with us before on a previous trip, or would like a little more time in the saddle than on our easier tours. Typically, the routes tend to range between 20 and 70km long. There is usually slightly more elevation gain during the day than on an Easy tour, but generally we try to keep days with more uphill cycling a little shorter in distance. The riding tends to be on a mixture of quiet lanes and designated cycle paths.

Moderate

With more significant ascents on most riding days and often longer daily distances, typically between 35 and 70km, our moderate tours are best suited to those with more cycling experience or who have enjoyed a leisurely tour with us in the past. Opting for an e-bike on these tours is a great way to make our Moderate tours more accessible to those used to riding a leisurely route on a hybrid bike. The riding is typically on a mixture of quiet lanes and designated cycle paths but can also involve some sections through busier towns or on routes with more traffic.

Active

These are our most challenging tours, and we normally recommend these holidays to those with extensive cycling experience. The daily route lengths are generally between 50 and 80km per day and the routes will often involve quite substantial ascents. Though predominantly riding on quiet lanes, as with our Moderate tours, there can also be some sections which cycle through busier towns or on routes with more traffic.
