Food and wine on a South Tyrol cycling holiday

Tyrolean Food & Wine

In the Dolomites, the locals tend to eat a hearty fare of game and polenta paired with robust and fruity wine from the South Tyrol. Menus include meat stews, risottos, gnocchi and tortellini. Risotto all’Amarone is a popular risotto with a generous amount of dry red wine from Valpolicella. Followed by either apple strudel or the Veronese cake, Pandoro, which is served with mascarpone, chocolate or cream. The perfect end to a day’s cycling in South Tyrol.

Historical Sights

From Riva del Garda on the northern shore, take the ferry across to Sirmione. The old town centre has impressive ruins, thermal baths and the Roman archaeological site of Grotte di Catullo that was once a Roman villa. Best known as the setting for Romeo & Juliet, Verona has a well-maintained Roman amphitheatre and the Verona Arena. Each summer the Arena hosts the annual opera festival and large concerts. Cycle between Renaissance churches to contemporary art galleries and fantastic local restaurants.

What our experts say

South Tyrol is one of Europe’s premiere cycling destinations thanks to an excellent network of cycle paths. While the terrain around you is full of staggering mountains, the cycling is in fact very gentle with most routes following the river valleys downhill. The region has a fantastic reputation for food, with Italian traditions mixed with Germanic flavours that create a truly distinctive cuisine.
